Today we will be talking about what is dementia and we will be introducing this disease.
Dementia is a general term that correlates to a broad range of medical conditions with Alzheimer's (a series of strokes) as one of the leading causes.
Abnormal brain changes are the base of these conditions, as it provokes a decline in cognitive abilities (thinking skills). This can be severe enough to hinder daily life and an individual's ability to independently function. Some other symptoms include loss in day-to-day memory, concentrating, speech, visuospatial skills, and orientation. There are two ways to manage and treat dementia, one involves drugs while the other does not.
Those diagnosed with Alzheimer's are prescribed either donepezil, rivastigmine, or galantamine. These drugs are only temporary since there is no method to fully eliminate this disorder.
A non-drug treatment would require different types of therapy (talking, cognitive stimulation, and cognitive-behavioral), rehabilitation, and engaging in other activities while socializing with others.
There are negative stigmas associated with this just like any other disorder, many may believe they are incapable of performing to the best of their abilities and have a personality that is hard to approach.
Essentially, mental health disorder is common around the world and greatly affects people's lives.
